Disney Home Entertainment

The Santa Clause franchise has become a staple for Christmas movies as Tim Allen has headlined the films since their inception. The Santa Clause 3 makes the series of movies complete with a trilogy of sorts starring Tim Allen as Santa Claus, and Martin Short as the villain Jack Frost.

The film revolves around Santa Claus and Jack Frost having many differences throughout. Martin Short plays the role of Jack Frost and plays a villain which you are going to truly hate. Santa gives Frost a second chance in the film after Frost is seen trying to basically steal the thunder of Santa. Instead of repaying Santa for his efforts though, Frost tries to ruin Christmas out of jealousy.

This is all going on while Mrs. Claus is about to have a baby, and Santa’s in-laws visit the North Pole. Frost finds out that there is an escape clause which allows Santa to get out of being Santa anymore, which is where the story truly kicks into gear.

The film may not be the best out of the three but it does have a very well-put-together story. The movie seems to run a bit flat in the middle as you just wait for the climatic event when Frost and Santa finally go head to head fighting for the right to bring Christmas to the world. Overall though Tim Allen is as good as ever as Santa, and Martin Short plays a great villain as Frost throughout. There is a lot of kids and adult-like humor which will have people of all ages enjoying this quality Christmas film. It may not be the deepest movie out there in terms of story and such, but for a holiday film, it brings all of the cheer and happiness you could want during this season.

Disney has always been known for great home video transfers on Blu-ray and DVD and this is no exception at all. The Santa Clause 3 looks great on DVD with solid color depth, flesh tones, and absolutely no grain or any of the such in the video. The North Pole looks vibrant and colorful as do all of the little CGI-work that was done with the special effects in the film. Everything comes together nicely in what ends up being a fantastic DVD transfer for the film. It is presented both in widescreen and full screen which is a major plus as well as many times films release in two versions. This allows you to view it in either full or widescreen, not having to worry about which TV you watch it on.

The same can be said about the audio as it is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround. The audio is not really going to wow you but it comes across in a nice manner as the front channels are used beautifully for the dialogue and story-telling while the rear channels use the ambience of the North Pole to bring your room into a Christmas-frenzy. The use of the rear channels could have been a bit more prominent but it is excusable for this sort of film. They are low-key enough that they keep the mood right while not detracting from the actual film taking place. Overall a well put-together audio track here.

In terms of special features Disney has included some truly solid stuff. The first couple of features I will mention include the musical features packed in here. This includes a Christmas Carol-oke, which allows you to sing to your favorite songs of Christmas. There is also a music video for Greatest Time of Year with Aly and AJ.

There is also a great audio commentary with Director Michael Lembeck included giving great views about the film throughout.

On top of that you have an alternate opening as well as a blooper reel. The blooper reel is unfortunately not very long but will really make you laugh as some of the mess-ups from Short and Allen are very funny. The alternate opening is also extremely unique and is an enjoyable view once or twice.

There are also some making of featurettes here which are well done. One of them is Jack Frost & Mrs. Clause: A very Different Look. This goes behind the scenes with the producer, director, and costume designer of The Santa Clause 3. This gives great insight into how the movie started, where the director was trying to go with the film, etc. Another aspect of the making of which is by far the most entertaining is The New Comedians. This goes on the set with Tim Allen and Martin Short. The cast and crew talk about just what it was like working with the two comedians which makes for some quality dialogue here. There is also a feature on how the visual effects of the film were made. This will please the fans whom get into the tech-type stuff, like me. I found this area of the making of interesting.

This time of year it seems that holiday films come from every direction, some good, some bad. The safe bet this season though is definitely Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. It is packed with some nice special features and a great DVD presentation. It still does not match the magic of the original film, but it does have enough Christmas spirit to be considered the best DVD buy this holiday season for those in the mood for a little Santa Claus.
